Chapter Ten

ROME

THREE YEARS AGO

“Ooh, let’s get cotton candy!” Sebastian grabs my hand and pulls me through the crowd at the local carnival. Now that it’s March it’s warm but not hot, and there’s a slight breeze in the air.

The music is so loud and there are so many people I can barely hear him, but I let him drag me along to the cotton candy stand where we order one giant pink stick and share it as we make our way through the grounds, families and couples bustling past us.

There’s people done up as clowns walking by on stilts, jugglers spaced throughout, and scads of games, including a ring toss, hole in one, can smash, frog launcher, a bean bag toss, a dunking booth, and more. Plus, lots of rides like the giant ferris wheel, the carousel, bumper cars, swings, the tilt-a-whirl, which I aptly renamed as the tilt-and-hurl after being on it and almost vomiting, and so many more that we have yet to discover. And I know I’ll be dragged on every last one.

It’s very lively and upbeat, and I hate it. But Sebastian is having fun and that’s what matters. He had another shitty day at school, being harassed, and I wanted to cheer him up, so here we are.

We stop at the can smash and he bats his eyelashes at me. “Win me a prize, big brother.”

“Why can’t you do it?” I say.

He holds up the cotton candy stick and mumbles around a mouth full. “I’m busy.”

I roll my eyes and step up to the booth. A few minutes later we’re walking away with a giant stuffed teddy bear that I have no idea what Sebastian is going to do with, but he’s smiling so wide I don’t fucking care.

We go on all the rides we haven’t been on yet after that, play more games, eat more overpriced but delicious food, and by the time we’re heading home I’m giving Sebastian a piggy back ride because he told me his legs were getting tired and gave me that puppy dog face I can’t resist. Whether or not he’s actually tired I have no idea, but I let him jump on my back and wrap his legs around me. Then I carry him and the giant teddy bear all the way to the car.

We spend the rest of the evening at home in front of the television eating even more unhealthy food, the teddy bear having joined us for the occasion, and when Sebastian falls asleep on the sofa, curled into a ball, his ridiculous bunny slippers on his feet, I carry him to bed and tuck him in.

“Rome?” he mumbles, as I reach for the lamp light on the nightstand next to his bed.

“Yeah?” I say.

“Thank you,” he murmurs.
